Boat Insurance
Author Last Post

Avocet insures through a broker in Florida who is licensed to place through surplus lines at a premium. The broker is Offshore Risk Management, Mauricio Silva - Account Manager II, 305-743-7711, 807 Forrest Ave., Cocoa FL 32922. mauricio@offshorerisk,com. He can get you insured in Nova Scotia or elsewhere. Currently he has me with Accelerant Specialty Insurance Company and my premium is about $2,500. Renewals that fall between January and the end of May (before hurricane season) will be less costly. Surplus lines fill in where other insures have withdrawn from the market and/or where demand exceeds capacity. I have a named operator policy which costs nothing additional for your named operators. You do not have to name crew unless you plan to run aground and tell them that the other guy was steering. I name my crew as operators. I will name Baddeck Marine as a loss payee for the 2024-2025 winter storage season. I will have a copy of my insurance declaration page with me. - John Slingerland

Since posting, Twig Burke 978-741-7800 (Burke Insurance Agency out of Salem, MA) came through with a policy for Avocet with substantially more coverage for substantially less money covering FL to Lat 51N. Survey w/i the year required.. Boston Yacht Club uses Burke as does BWSC. John 10/31/2023

My boat insurance, issued by "Atlantic Specialty Insurance Company" and brokered by Burke Insurance Agency, provides $2,000.00 coverage for towing and emergency assistance coverage (while away from a safe harbor) at no additional premium and without a deductible. Coverage includes emergency repairs at site of disablement. I have not renewed my $300 Boat US towing plan. John 12/7/2023

I currently use MAPFRE for insurance but they are not willing to insure the boat if left in Nova Scotia over the winter. I was wondering what insurance company others are using that will insure the boat while it’s stored in Nova Scotia over the winter.

Thanks,

Ed
